Thyroiditis refers to a group of inflammatory conditions of the thyroid gland caused by various etiologies. There are multiple classifications of thyroiditis. Based on etiology, it can be categorized as acute infectious thyroiditis (including bacterial, fungal, protozoal, and helminthic infections), subacute granulomatous thyroiditis, and thyroiditis resulting from autoimmune processes, medications, or trauma. This section primarily discusses subacute granulomatous thyroiditis and autoimmune thyroiditis.
